USA-valet, på plats: Republikansk tsunamivarning
WASHINGTON, DC. Bevakningen av kongressvalet i USA den 2 november har i svenska medier fram till sista veckan varit modest. Och visst, mellanårsvalen är mindre intressanta än presidentvalen, som ju brukar få nästan lika mycket täckning i Sverige som våra egna riksdagsval. I år verkar dock intresset för att förmedla vad som är på väg att hända på andra sidan pölen ha varit mindre än vanligt. Detta beror nog delvis på att resultatet inte kommer att falla den svenska journalistkåren i smaken. Det skriver Anders Edwardsson.
Sydafrikanska medier utmanas
I fredags (22/10) höll Ax:son Johnson stiftelsen ett internationellt seminarium om media och politik. På plats fanns experter från fyra kontinenter. När den afrikanska situationen avhandlades stod Sydafrika i fokus. Janice Winter, Guy Berger och Pippa Green presenterade sina tolkningar av medias roll i den unga demokratin. Som väntat var det en ganska dyster bild som målades upp. Det skriver Anna Rennéus Guthrie.
Definitivt kris, men förnyelse?
Det är inte bara i Sverige socialdemokratin befinner sig i kris, både i Danmark och Norge har de socialdemokratiska partierna gjort historiska valförluster under det senaste decenniet. Det politiska landskapet har förändrats. Maria Eriksson skriver om Nordiska ministerrådets seminarium på temat ”Socialdemokraterna – kris eller pånyttfödelse?”
TT håller inte måttet
Den granskning som nyligen gjorts av Mediegranskningsföretaget Second Opinion är en stark indikation på att TT – som är en av Sveriges viktigaste nyhetskällor – inte håller tillräckligt hög kvalitet. Men nyhetsbyråns reaktion till studien är minst sagt lam. Svenska medier måste bevara sin trovärdighet, och bör därför liksom flera utländska redaktioner satsa resurser på faktakontroll, menar Mats Olin.
Folkomröstningen i Turkiet – Från sekularisering till islamisering eller från militarisering till demokratisering?
För en månad sedan fick regeringspartiet AKP i Turkiet grönt ljus för en reformering av grundlagen i en folkomröstning som föregåtts av en intensiv kampanj från båda sidor, kantad av hätska debatter och avslöjade kuppmakare. Medan europeiska politiker kallar grundlagsändringen för demokratisering och menar att detta kan vara startskottet för ett turkiskt EU-medlemskap, anser många andra intellektuella att detta är slutet för Turkiets sekularism och början till en smygislamisering. Kampen om makten över BBC går vidare
BBC har blivit föremål för tukt och förmaning sedan koalitionsregeringen tillträdde i maj. Att en sittande regering så direkt går in och tvingar det anrika och ansedda public service-företaget att vädra sina garderober offentligt är en uppseendeväckande sak i Storbritannien. Kulturministern gör detta för att stoppa inte minst den svindlande lönekarusell som under senare år snurrat på BBC. Det skriver Carl Otto Werkelid.
Att känna sina ideologiska rötter – även när det gäller jämställdhet
Många av dem som förespråkar kvotering motiverar ständigt behovet av fler kvinnor i bolagsstyrelser med den speciella kompetens som kvinnor i egenskap av just kvinnor sägs besitta. Ett sådant påstående bygger på en särartsfeministisk analys där kvinnor och män är ohjälpligt olika. I ett kollektivistiskt sätt att argumentera för jämställdhet utraderas individen till förmån för kollektivet – individuella rättigheter blir sekundära. Den svenska jämställdhetsdebatten behöver den liberala analysen, menar Maria Ludvigsson.
Världen väntar inte
Den globala konkurrensen hårdnar och Sverige behöver gripa sig an globaliseringens utmaningar. Därför behöver Sverige en mer framåtsyftande politik. Men spåren från den politik av framåtanda Alliansen signalerade under valet 2006, och som sedan fördes under början av den gångna mandatperioden, verkar vara försvunna, skriver Urban Bäckström.
